Do I need travel Insurance in Canada?

Accidents Do Happen

The fundamental problem with people is that we simply believe nothing bad will happen to us. The sad reality of this is that more times than not something bad will happen or an illness can strike without warning.

In 2013 the total number of Personal Injuries while operating a motor vehicle in Canada was 120,660. So the probability of a simple car accident during a road trip can happen, and though not fatal your injuries may need a hospital visit which could then leave you with thousands of dollars bill that you may well not be prepared for.

Hospital Stays in another Province

Planning a road trip across Canada or simply visiting another province?  Would it surprise you to find out that if you are to have an accident or to become sick and have to seek medical care in another province that it might cost you for that visit?  The truth is that medical care costs are different from province to province and although our Healthcare system does cover costs, it only covers what the cost would be in your province. Without travel insurance it could cost you a considerable amount. Not to mention if you require a air ambulance to get you off the ski slope or off the lake which typically is not covered under your provincial healthcare. This additional financial stress could simply ruin your trip or holiday with unexpected financial stress.

Why is there a Cost Difference?

Medical Care in Canada is governed by the individual provinces, which can cause varying expenses in hospital stays or medical care. With these variances in costs the inevitable result is a widely ranging expense at the time of an emergency or visit to a hospital. Though these provinces have agreements with each other to help avoid up front billing, the sad reality is that a pay up front can occur.  Then you will have to seek reimbursement from your own provinces medic care. The problem comes in is that the time to get reimbursement from them can take months or more.

In the mean time you may have had to use your saving, or a credit card to temporarily take care of the bill, or in the worst case scenario you had to use your vacation funds to pay for it.

Travel Insurance can be an excellent way to protect yourself from unexpected expenses and financial hardship during your trip. For a tiny amount for your vacation you can have the reassurance that if anything did happen you would be covered and avoid any additional costs.
