Thieves can use stolen identities to:

  • Obtain credit cards or utilities in your name and leave you with the bill.
  • Take out a loan in your name.
  • Obtain documents like drivers licenses in your name and commit fraud.
  • Get jobs using your Social Insurance Number.
  • Rent a house or get prescriptions filled.

After it’s all done, identity theft leaves you, the victim, trying to sort out the mess and pay the fees!

How does Identity Theft Happen?

The ways thieves can obtain your information are ingenious to say the least; they can pick through trash to find key pieces of data, install spyware on your computer and steal mail from your mailbox, etc.

Some signs your identity may have been stolen include:

  • When bills arrive from accounts you never had. Don’t dismiss these but call and find out exactly what’s going on.
  • Receiving calls from Collection Agencies about unknown debts.
  • Receiving bills for purchases you’ve never made.
  • If your credit report shows mysterious debts. Note: It is suggested that you check your own credit report at least once a year.

Identity Theft Insurance is one solution to this problem that you might want to consider. Identity Theft Insurance is a policy that covers the expenses you can incur while dealing with the theft if your identity is stolen.

And Remember

If your identity has been stolen:

  • Call your financial institution and the local police.
  • Put a fraud alert on your credit report.
  • Contact Canada Post if your mail is missing.
  • Keep careful records of all steps taken to clear your name and rebuild your credit. This can be important later on.
