that damage may occur to your property. The following checklist for the outside and inside of your home will assist you in getting your home ready.
OUTSIDE YOUR HOME
â˜ Clean eave troughs and downspouts.
â˜ Look for cracks or damage to the outside and repair as needed
â˜ Drain pipes that are not required during the winter
â˜ Check caulking around windows and door frames, replace as necessary
â˜ Check the roof and flashing for damage and repair
â˜ Weather stripping requires replacement around doors and windows every few years. Check and replace as required
â˜ Winterize your pool or hot tub
â˜ Turn water off on outside taps, drain and leave open for the winter. This protects the plumbing during the winter months from cracking due to frozen water in the pipes
â˜ Excessive snow around your foundation may cause water damage during the spring thaw. Always remove it
INSIDE YOUR HOME
â˜ Check the insulation on your heat-ducts and water pipes
â˜ Maintain air temperature no lower than 4.5C (40F) in all building areas including crawl spaces, closets, lofts, and other similar areas
â˜ Install low temperature sensors that are connected to you home’s monitored alarm system
â˜ Inspect the hoses on the dishwasher and washing machine. Replace cracked hoses and clean the filters
â˜ Important to know where the water shut-off valve is and how the use it
â˜ Furnaces and air conditioners need servicing annually by professionals
â˜ Chimneys need to be cleaned annually and repaired if needed
